Middle School Music Course Descriptions

This course is designed for students who wish to explore the realm of music in a non-performance based setting. We will study music from cultures around the world and connect it to music they experience in their own lives.  The class starts with building a basic understanding of standard music notation and composition. This class is open to all 6th grade students and is not a performance course.



This ensemble is open to all students who are interested in vocal music. This is a beginning vocal group and its purpose is to teach proper use of the voice, elementary music reading, and vocal literature. This course requires multiple performances outside of the school day. Students will create a portfolio including recorded performance samples and written mat

This ensemble is open to all students who are interested in vocal music. This is a beginning vocal group and its purpose is to teach proper use of the voice, elementary music reading, and vocal literature. This course requires multiple performances outside of the school day. Students will create a portfolio including recorded performance samples and written materials. Students are also offered an opportunity to participate in Solo and Ensemble Festival.

Students will further develop their performance skills performing varied levels and styles of wind band music. Students will receive a minimum of 3 lessons per trimester with like-instruments to improve their playing skills. Students will also have the opportunity to work with leading band clinician and participate in the Solo and Ensemble project in the spring.  Students will have a field trip to the high school to watch and learn more about the high school marching band. There are three concert performances each year: December, March and May. In addition to the three concerts, students will perform in the Rotunda at the State Capitol. There is a fee for renting school-owned instruments.

Students will learn how to play a musical instrument of their choice.  They will focus on the fundamental elements of tone production, note reading, rhythm, and other musical elements to develop their performance skills performing ,5 - 1 level and varied styles of wind band music. Students will receive a minimum of 3 lessons per trimester with like instruments to improve their playing skills.  There are three concert performances each year: December, March and May.  There is a fee for renting school-owned instruments.
