Course Description
This course introduces students to basic apparel design, textiles, and construction skills. The students will be exposed to the global apparel industry and entrepreneurial opportunities. Service learning will be an integral part of this course: constructing apparel, accessories, and consumer products. Students will also explore contemporary methods in the textile industry & merchandising.
Key Course Learning Experiences
Aesthetic Study: Students will create an artwork that encompasses the origins of their aesthetic & sense of personal style
Hand Sewing Construction: Students will create an original textile design using various hand sewing techniques
Fibers & Fabrics Scavenger Hunt: Students will create a digital lookbook of various types of fabrics & fibers
Embroidery Upcycle Design: Students will improve the value of an article of clothing using various creative embroidery techniques
Textile Product Design: Students will construct an original textile product from start to finish, including a sewing pattern & prototype

Practical Application: New skills, concepts, and content can be applied across multiple assignments and connected to other disciplines.
Performance-Based Assessments: Authentic learning experiences are designed to allow for flexibility and creativity, providing opportunities for students to take charge of their own learning. Performance towards Essential Learning Goals is adaptable to students’ strengths & interests. Direction, minimum requirements, and success criteria will be provided at the beginning of each summative assessment.
Meaningful Learning: Creative processes will be visually, written, and orally communicated in professional, authentic ways. Artifacts created will exhibit craftsmanship in concept & technical execution, exploring personal interests, intents, and ideas with originality and purpose.
- Functional Assessments: Students will evaluate their performance, strengths, and needs for improvement in the process of completing assignments, as well as the conclusion of each summative assessment. The instructor will provide constructive feedback throughout the process and will allow students opportunities to upgrade their work. Assessments are structured to provide beneficial, personalized feedback for the growth of each student.
